Keep Your Lane

Keep Your Lane

A few weeks ago, I was returning home from a late-night shift in my car. I was up since five o'clock in the morning; hence, it was evident that drowsiness completely overwhelmed me. What bothered me was when I was about to pass through a tunnel. Those high-intensity lights before moving into the tunnel completely blinded me.
At this point, I realised an important lesson they give you while teaching how to drive: Always keep your lane. It seems like a cliched statement, and I am sure many of you have heard it hundreds, if not thousands, of times in your life. But I realised at that very moment that this message is not only limited to driving alone; it is valuable in every aspect of our lives.

Consider those blinding lights as shiny objects we bump into now and then. When starting a new project, you bump into something that you think is more interesting. You are fed up with the same mundane routine and the increasing difficulty of your current task. You find a new project (a shiny object), and then you want to give it a shot. In doing so, you sometimes have to discharge yourself from the current task completely. Not long after, you will find a new attractive project -which you will feel is made only for you. In following that pursuit, you will liberate yourself from the current project. Eventually, you will end up nowhere but in a complete mess.
The lesson here is simple: keep the current task and master it unless you are ready for another opportunity.
Similarly, keep your lane when you approach blinding lights. Only change the route when it is the right time to do so.
